Marx was in many ways an awful human being. The fall from grace is embodied in capitalism man is redeemed as the proletariat rises up against its exploiters and creates a communist utopia.Ī second reason is the power of his personality. He was a latter-day prophet describing the march of God on Earth. Who can forget his observation that history repeats itself, “the first time as tragedy, the second as farce”? His ideas were as much religious as scientific-you might even call them religion repackaged for a secular age. ![]() But he was a brilliant thinker: he developed a theory of society driven forward by economic forces-not just by the means of production but by the relationship between owners and workers-and destined to pass through certain developmental stages. Marx may not have been the scientist that he thought he was. The obvious reason is the sheer power of those ideas. Why does the world remain fixated on the ideas of a man who helped to produce so much suffering? The point of madness But the sheer volume of commentary is evidence of something important. ![]() The best short introduction is still Isaiah Berlin’s “Karl Marx”, which was published in 1939. We can all parrot the right words when required but a thank you means much more when accompanied with real gratitude and sorry means much more when partnered with a hug.Īt the Pickle Farm we talk about what it means to have ‘good manners’ and to be gracious, thankful, polite and compassionate. What we want is for our children to really mean the things they say and to understand why they are saying them. #WHATS THE MAGIC WORD HOW TO#It’s not that we don’t value manners nor want our children to know how to behave in social situations. There needs to be understanding and intent behind those words to make them meaningful, and I don’t believe you encourage that be making a simple rule that they must always be said. Simply saying thank you does not mean you appreciated something or someone, and just saying sorry doesn’t magically make whatever happened ok. You can’t have something simply because you said please. Would recommend for anyone who enjoys a good story of the supernatural and macabre, with both loveable and creepy characters. The Graveyard Book manages the remarkable feat of playing delightful jazz riffs on Kipling's classic Jungle Books. I also feel like attention was paid to the universe as a whole – everything made sense, and the plot had a satisfying and bittersweet conclusion. ![]() Admittedly I have a very vivid imagination, but Gaiman is also just a really good writer who cannot fail to drag you along. While this definitely works as a children’s book, I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult. I was legitimately terrified by some of the scary bits, more so than I’ve been by most “adult” thrillers – and found myself talking aloud to the audibook (“No, Bod, don’t do it, don’t go there!”). I felt like I was there in the graveyard with Bod, and alongside him for all his adventures. A toddler escapes a nefarious killer who has just murdered the rest of his family. ![]() This is a really well-crafted story of wonder. It took me a little while to get used to the narration as I first felt like Gaiman’s accent was all over the place (regardless of the character currently speaking), but after a while either he or I settled down, and he does have a nice voice. UPDATE: I forgot to mention (this is the disadvantage of reviewing books weeks after the fact) that each chapter is introduced with a bit of Camille Saint-Saëns’s Dance Macabre, which is a wonderful piece of music and really helps set the tone of the story. There’s probably some very profound life lesson in there, but I’m too sleepy to work out what it is. We only have one job on this ship, and we’re a long way from the normal distractions of life.īut there still just isn’t enough time. It’s frustrating not to have time to fully digest the data as we gather it, but there seems to be no time to do anything other than the essentials. But once the lead freezes over we will have much less to measure, so it’s hard to make that call. Our group has agreed that we need to take half days off when we can, because tired people make mistakes, and we need to be alert. ![]() But things are getting easier as our setup improves and we can trust our instruments to record without being continually checked on. The open lead could freeze over at any time, and it would be stupid to miss a measurement day when it’s taken so much time and effort to get to this point. Then it’s data download, meetings, logistics for the following day, and suddenly it’s time to pull down the blackout blinds, ready to start all over again the next day. At 5pm, we start the walk back to the ship, arriving just in time for dinner. My favourite Swedish hut treat is ‘blueberry soup’, a hot sweet blueberry puree drink that comes in Thermos flasks and is perfect for this environment. At lunchtime we pile into our tiny hut, sitting on equipment cases or folding chairs, curious about what the kitchen has packed for us today. Even the most basic tasks take a long time because of snow and cold fingers and navigating around the site. #A storm in a teacup thermos manualThe work is mostly manual labour Replacing batteries (batteries feature heavily in all our lives), lowering sensors through the water, digging holes, positioning markers, taking photographs, putting large experiments into the water, taking them out again, and mooring floating sensors. The walk is stunning a well-trodden track that winds around meltponds and across cracks, although if it’s been warm (above zero degrees) surface slush can make it hard going. After that it’s time to suit up, and there’s a constant stream of people passing through the store beneath the heli-deck, pulling on enormous flotation suits, commenting on whether the suits have fully dried out from the day before, checking radios and fastening up snowboots.Īt the gangway, we radio the bridge to tell them we’re leaving the ship, and then we have a 2km walk to the open lead with our bear guard. ![]() ![]() Then I pack everything else I need to take spare equipment, laptop, data drives and a chocolate stash. The only power at our site comes from a mix of 20kg and 50 kg lithium and lead-acid batteries, and they get transported there and back each day by snowmobile. First I go to the back of the ship to carry my heavy sea-batteries from their charging station to the crane. There’s the gym, and breakfast, and then we have an hour to prepare before going out on the ice. #A storm in a teacup thermos freeAlso, I’m very happy to start each day dancing through my circuit training routine to cheerful cheesy music (feel free to judge I don’t care). I’m very happy to live and work in cooperative shared space like this, but when I’m with other people for every moment of every day I find that an hour of isolated time (usually exercising) makes everything else much easier. I will admit that I don’t help myself by getting up at 6am each day so that I can go to the gym before breakfast, but it’s a necessary part of the day. I’m not complaining, but I would very much like to be in bed by 9pm. Tasks pour into the neat compartments in the ship’s routine and it’s clear that someone forgot to say ‘when’. It’s not the work itself which is tiring, but the time-consuming nature of doing anything either on the ice or on the ship. #A storm in a teacup thermos fullNow greet your caller with Storm in a Teacup song by setting it up as your Hello Tune on the Wynk Music App for free. It’s 8:30pm on our ninth full working day at the open lead (our worksite out on the ice floe), and the constant cycle of fieldwork is starting to take its toll. As far as she knew, Scarlet’s old friend Macready had headed North towards the Commonwealth. So with her lever action rifle, she went off in search of something great. As much as Macready would hate to admit it, she was a better shot than him. For 6 long years in Little Lamplight, Scarlet trained with Macready in marksmanship skills, and she was talented. She would have been scared, except now she was ready for whatever she had to face. Now being too old to stay in Little Lamplight, Scarlet had to leave and venture off into the wasteland. Not even the snarky jokes of Mayor Macready were enough to dull her happiness. This place was a haven for children like her, and she came to love it very quickly. That is, until she came across a place called Little Lamplight. The Starlet Sniper at its core is a heroic, Western sharpshooter who through the use of jet (however for the sake of roleplay it's instead viewed as extreme skill and focus) is able to use a scoped lever action rifle to rack up high damage headshots (without the use of V.A.T.S.) and pull off impressive and entertaining shots to take down hostiles (don't worry, I have some footage to share). She's tough, she's beautiful, and she's the best shot in Commonwealth. ![]() The Starlet Sniper satisfies the desires for unique combat, engaging roleplay (that fits well within the Fallout universe), great aesthetics, and just all around a great experience What started as a passing glance of one of the many comic books in Fallout 4 led to one of the most fast-paced and fun playthroughs I've had in any roleplaying game. ![]() |
